About Us

Who We Are

Carlos Vizhnay, CAA, EA, NTPIF

Carlos began his interest in accounting and taxes at a very early age.

When he was about seven years old, during school vacation, he accompanied his grandfather to work. His grandpa was a manager at a branch of the Central Bank of Ecuador near the border with Peru. Once a month, he spent a whole day at grandpa’s office where he would see his grandpa and other accountants used manual calculators and work on accounting ledgers. Carlos was fascinated how people manually entered numbers and data on papers. He wondered what that was all about. His grandpa assured him the work done at the bank was very important.

In the spring of 1983, at the age of nineteen, Carlos and his family arrived in NYC. As the oldest of four siblings, he held several jobs to help his family with rent payments and household expenses. He enrolled in night-school to obtain his GED.  In 1983, his mom mentioned that people who prepare taxes do an important job. His experience at grandpa’s job came flashing back to his memory and he became very interested in tax preparation. In that year, he enrolled in H & R Block Income Tax School where he successfully completed the tax preparation course.  At tax school, he discovered his passion for taxes as he learned how the U.S. tax system works. In 1984, Carlos started doing taxes for family and friends. During tax season, his office was a small desk space at the entrance of his family’s apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, New York.

During the Immigration Reform & Amnesty of 1986, Carlos volunteered in local community centers and churches with amnesty applications providing language translations and preparation of tax returns required for immigration applications.  At the conclusion of the immigration amnesty program, Carlos was awarded a plaque by Brooklyn Catholic Migration Services in recognition for his valuable time and services as a community volunteer.

In 1989, Carlos’ tax clientele had grown large enough that he had to open an official store front tax office. That year, with the with help of family loans, he founded Tax Matrix Inc. and later Vizhnay & Co. Inc. in Sunnyside, where he ran the family tax office serving small businesses and individuals. In that same year, Carlos became a New York State Notary Public. His office is now located in Woodside, Queens, a few blocks away from where he first started doing taxes.

In 1993, Carlos graduated with honors from LaGuardia Community College earning an associate degree in accounting.  Immediately after, he transferred to Queens College and in 1996, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

In 2003, Carlos passed the Special Enrollment Examination and became an IRS Enrolled Agent. In 2015 he earned the designation of National Tax Practice Institute Fellow, NTPIF. He represents taxpayers before the collection, audit, and appeals offices of the IRS.

Carlos is a CPA candidate; he has passed two parts of the CPA exam.
